ROYAL NEWFOUNDLAND CONSTABULARY  (NL)
The Newfoundland Constabulary along with its sister force the Newfoundland Ranger Force basically policed all of Newfoundland and Labrador from approximately 1871 (origins of the Force date back to 1729), up until 1949 when we became a Province of Canada. In 1950 the RCMP were tasked with policing the province with the exception of the capital city of St. John's which remained the jurisdiction of the then Newfoundland Constabulary. The Newfoundland Ranger Force which policed the rural areas of Newfoundland and Labrador was disbanded and a large number of the Force were absorbed by the RCMP. In 1979 the Newfoundland Constabulary was officially bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II to be the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary - a distinction shared by only five other police forces worldwide. In 1984 the RNC expanded to police the Northeast Avalon Peninsula and also returned to policing in Labrador City, Wabush and Churchill Falls in Labrador. In 1986, RNC returned to policing the City of Corner Brook, NL.
